This was the first of the International Kagyu Monlams to be held this year and, as is the tradition, followed the pattern of the Kagyu Monlam Chenmo which is held every year in Bodh Gaya.

The Indonesian Kagyu Monlam was held at the ancient Borobudur Temple complex from 22-24 April 2017 and was the 9th Kagyu Monlam to be organized by Sangha and lay people in Indonesia. Trulku Rinjung Rinpoche presided, and the event was attended by 79 monks and nuns as well as 157 laypeople, from Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan and Hong Kong.

The first day began at 4.30 am with a procession of His Holiness the 17th Karmapa’s photo, which was placed on the Dharma throne. The prayers opened with the Riwo Shangcho puja and Sojong vows. Before bestowing these vows, Trulku Rinjung Rinpoche gave a brief overview of their meaning and the benefits of taking them. There was a short break for breakfast and then the recitation of the Monlam prayers continued.

At 10.00am the official opening ceremony began. It was attended by the officials of the Taman Wisata Borobudur and the conservation center of Borobudur Temple. The Guests of Honour received souvenirs, and there was a food offering for the local poor. The opening ceremony concluded with a spectacular release of birds and the planting of a Bodhi tree in the environs of world-famous Borobudur temple. The recitation of Monlam prayers continued after lunch and the day concluded with the Mahakala puja and Surchod puja.

On the second day, prayers started at 5.00am with the Riwo Sangchod puja and Sojong vows. After the Monlam 20-branch offering, the Sangha and selected participants processed around the Borobudur Temple respectfully holding aloft the Kangyur and Tengyur. First came the gyalin, and then Trulku Rinjung Rinpoche followed by Sangha members and white-clothed lay people, singing the praises of the Three Jewels. Then the sponsors offered mandala offerings and the Sangha recited the Kangyur and Tengyur scriptures. During the lunchbreak, some of the Sangha and lay people participated in a tree planting, part of a reforestation project, in the Lumbini Field area of the Borobudur complex.

The afternoon session continued with puja dedication for the deceased.

On the third day, after the morning puja and before the breakfast, there was a photo session for everyone, against the background of the ancient Borobudur Temple. The morning session included a Procession of the 16 Arhats, with Sangha members, dressed as the Arhats, wearing masks and carrying their specific attributes. The Sponsor Appreciation took place after lunch, accompanied by a distribution of food aid to an orphanage near Borobudur.

The grand finale of the 9th Indonesian Kagyu Monlam was held in the early evening with a lamp puja (Marme Monlam) and pradaksina and recitation of the Karmapa Khenno mantra around the Borobudur Temple.

13th Taiwan Kagyu Monlam 2016

Due to the inspiration and blessings of His Holiness the 17th Gyalwang Karmapa, the 13th Taiwan Kagyu Monlam was successfully completed at the Chieftain Youth Activity Center in Taipei. This year’s principal organizer was Khenchen Tsulnam Rinpoche and his three Palriling Dharma Centers of Taiwan. They invited Khenchen Lodro Donyo Rinpoche of Bokar Monastery to preside over the Monlam. Khenchen Rinpoche graciously accepted the invitation and bestowed teachings each morning on glorious Atisha’s Lamp of the Path to Enlightenment. His joy in presenting the Dharma and his depth of learning were deeply appreciated by all.

The preparations by Khenchen Tsulnam Rinpoche and his three Palriling centers in Taiwan have been wonderful, and the event ran very smoothly. Lama Karma Chodrak—the Chief Executiveer of Kagyu Monlam International was present for the entire three days and provided guidance and support. Many participants commented on how touched they were by this year’s Monlam experience.
